In Oakland, he sported long hair and a goat-tee. George made him shave that thing as soon as he got to NYC. Sure, he had a few good years, but he still probably wanted to grow the beard back. He hates shaving, same with Damon. Also, when Clemens was able to sport a goat in Toronto, he had his 2 best years ever. I say lose the no facial hair rule. And if the Yankees bring in Joe Girardi, who is the biggest jarhead marine style guy ever (he probably gets his flat-top trimmed every week) there will be no chance of the no-facial hair rule being over-turned. I believe Willie Randolph and the Mets have the no facial hair/long hair rule also, but I believe those are the only 2 teams in the majors with such rules. I think they're hippocrits. They won't let their players have facial hair, but they welcome multiple time drug offenders to their team (Steve Howe, Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, to name a few). There moral compass is totally screwed up.

First off all, if a player is better because of faical hair then he some serious mental issues. Having facial hair or not should not effect your performance.

Second, although i personally have no problem with facial hair, I think its good that the players do have to follow some rules. These are not exactly under serious control.

It's a good rule. The Yankees are a cut above the other teams, whether one likes it or not, and hold themselves to a higher standard regarding appearance. All part of the mystique. There's no "I" in team, folks--be yourself on your own time. . . .

It's supposed to be part of the "Yankee Mystique". I think it's all bull now anyway. After they let Clemens have absolutely anything he wanted in that contract, all that "Yankee Class" I've been hearing about went right out the window.

Johnny Damon's best year came in 2000 with the Royals, when he was as clean-shaven as he is today. And his strong years in Boston likely have much less to do with facial hair than they do the fact that he was in his prime years - 28-30 - while wearing a Red Sox uniform.

I don't think there are any modern-day Samsons in major league baseball. If the Yankees want to hold players to a certain standard regarding their appearance, that's their right. If you look at their history and vault full of championships, it doesn't seem to have hurt them.

If you are going to treat the game as a business then you should act like and dress like it is a business. Would you go to a fortune 500 company dressed like garbage and have enough hair to be compared with saquatch? I do not think so, you would come dressed like you belong there. It is about presenting yourself as a classy organization. Giambi has declined with the pressure of BALCO and Damon's body is finally giving out from the punishment that it has taken over the years. I do not think that Damon is Sampson and lost his ability due to cutting his hair. He was clean cut in Oakland and KC and put up good numbers there.

I think it is a bad idea.

I am a big fan of facial hair. I have had a beard constantly since I was 25. When I was young the Reds(the Big Red Machine teams) had a more extreme policy than the Yankees(the Yankees do allow mustasches). I hated the Reds with a major passion back then.

You can debate this til you die, but each team has its own set of standards that it expects the players to live by if he doesn't agree with them he can play in a different city I'm sure.
