We have recently took on a shitzu who has lost alot of hair .she did itch a bit . what is wrong with

The best thing to do is take her to the vet. Losing hair and having itchy skin can be many things.. especially if you dont know much about her. It could be allergies, demodectic or sarcoptic mange, a thyroid issue, bad diet, or simply just dry skin. Take her to the vet to rule out any serious issues that should be treated. If her health check is good, then buy an oatmeal based shampoo and bathe her once every 2 weeks until it starts to improve then bathe less often. Make sure you are feeding a good food (no store brand dog foods) You can also put cod liver oil or omega oil on her food to improve her skin and coat. All of these are things to try, good luck!

The first thing vets look at is the food. Put her on a QUALITY food with fish, no beef. Beef is the number one thing dogs are alergic too. Dont bathe her because it could be the shampoo, only take her to a groomer and tell them to use gentle shampoo. My guess is that it is a genetic disease and I think that you should call your vet.

Try checking this first-

Give her a bath. Let her dry and smell her the next day. Does she have an odor still (if had one previously). If so, my guess would be sarcoptic mange. Different from the more common demodectic mange. Mitoban is some great stuff if you get it from your vet.

Other than that, an allergic reaction to food, shampoo, your fabric detergent and softeners, medication, or fleas?

The simple check first is the bath. Often anti-itch shampoos will help, but not if it is the mange. For temporary relief- Aveeno bath mix for people gives some relief.

To test for this at the vet, they do a tiny skin scraping and look at it under microscope. This little mange mite looks really painful too!

It might be a skin allergy. Dogs are prone to have them. I would take it to the vet as soon as possible so you know for sure that she doesn't have mange.

A vet would be able to determine what is wrong with her. Losing hair and itching could be a sign of many things, as others said. I did not see fleas or mites or yeast. All common. ShihTzus get yeast infections in their ears because of their floppy ears, and it can spread through out the skin. There is a nasty odor that goes along with the yeast infections, if that helps. My Tzu had yeast throughout her ears and skin. My vet said to bathe her with Selsun Blue Medicated shampoo. Vet also gave me drops for her ears, but she gave me such a hard time with the drops, I just used the shampoo. Cleared up the yeast pretty fast. BUT I am not saying that is what your dog has. Go to a vet to find out what it may be.

I have taken on a dog with a similar problem and all the vet did was charge me a large amount of cash and told me nothing. As several people have said it could be anything, One of the problems I have put it down to is stress of leaving the owner. Along with allergies. the vet wanted to start testing for this but decided not to when found out the price per sample.

I have just kept bathing her with a gentle shampoo for dogs, and the girlfriends has used a antiseptic cream on any area's that are troublesome. It seems to have worked as the dogs hair is now starting to slowly regrow and the itching has eased alot. She still has itching spells but it is a matter of keeping an eye on her and try changing a few things. Do you use a carpet freshener when you hoover. Do you wash her bedding with the same washing powders as you use for your own clothes. It might just be some thing as simple as fleas.

Hope you find out the problem soon.
