Hair loss (doctors only please)?

My daughter is 13 and is lossing alot of hair and notice that her hair does not grow like it use too. When showering she loses alot of hair...is this normal? And if it isn't, what is wrong and how can I help her.

Hair loss (doctors only please)?

Great answers everyone!!

The person who mentioned alopecia areata brings up an imprtant point.

Is the hair loss across the whole head - or is it in one or two locations (alopecia areata)?

The causes of each are quite different.

If the hair loss is generalized - then it could, indeed, be stress. If there is flaking or rash - you need to consider a couple other things like tinea capitis (a stubborn fungal infection) as well as systemic diseases like thyroid disease or anemis (need lab tests to evaluate for these).

If there is only one spot or a couple - then it is areata - and there is a treatment (unnecessary to treat if not severe - eventually it will regrow - but you can "jump start" the growth by injecting steroids into the scalp...and no...she won't really like that...but if the doc puts some xylocaine in the injection it doesn't hurt that much).

Please see your doctor for this - either way it deserves proper medical attention.

see your family dr first off. a few blood tests may reveal the cause. failing that, he/she may refer you to a specialist in childrens medicine.

Ha, I'm not a doctor. I'm not sure doctors would have time for Yahoo Answers. I'd say I lost a LOT of hair when mine was shoulder length. Clogged the drains and everything, but mine grew back. If her's isn't growing back, why not TAKE her to a doctor?

Something I know it could be, but can't be sure, because I'm not a doctor and even more importantly, she's not in MY office...

Stress. She could be depressed, over worked from school, anxious about school or life in general. Look for any underlining causes of mental disorders (anxiety disorders or depression).

Maybe she just needs a hair cut? Seriously.

It could be a B6 deficiency, folic acid deficiency or anaemia.

Take her to a GP and request a blood test. Extreme stress, worry or anxiety can also cause hair loss. Hormonal changes have also been the cause of hair loss, and as she is 13 this could also be the cause.

You probably will not get a doctor to answer here, so I hope this information helps. First of all everyone loses a certain amount of hair when they shower. It is just natures way and it is normal.

There is a hair loss condition called "alopecia areata". There are web sites on this condition. Just type in alopecia areata, then go to #2 Question %26amp; Answers. It explains clearly what it is, if the hair grows back, etc.

I hope that this helps you and your daughter. She must be quite upset being only 13. Let me know how she makes out. I do care.

From what I know, if it is below 100 hairs/day, it is still normal. But, I have experience using an anti hair loss product from France and I ve recommended 2 friends, and they worked. By the way, where are you? which country? I'll give the nearest address you can purchased yourself, because it is sold worldwide. Email me your country to anwar.tirta@yahoo.com if you are serious want to help your daughter.
